Guide to what's to be found in Ciao Famiglia

by Adrian Fletcher (afletch at paradoxplace dot com)

This web-site is written by Adrian Fletcher and is about seven generations of his direct ancestors.  Since the site was launched in mid 2009 it has grown, in the way of web-sites, larger than expected and therefore become a bit more challenging to navigate.  The purpose of this short guide is to outline (with links) what is in the site to help users find what they want .

The best place to start is with the Recent Ancestors of Angela Williams (Fletcher) & Adrian Fletcher page.  This identifies (with photos and links) Adrian and Angela's parents, grand-parents and great-grand-parents, and outlines lots of facts about their lives.

Underlying the Recent Ancestors chart are four charts, one for each pair of great-grandparents, showing further generations of direct ancestors for:

Dr George Frederick Aldous and Isabella Henderson Aldous (Stewart)

mother's mother's parents

PLYMOUTH, MELBOURNE, BRECHIN, BELFAST, BURITON (HAMPSHIRE), HARLESTON (NORFOLK) AND MORE

Alex Harpur Robinson Sproule and Matilda Sproule (Sproule)

mother's father's parents (seated)

Co TYRONE (n IRELAND), PETERBOROUGH (ONTARIO)

Lt Col John Adolphus Burton and Georgiana Ernstin Burton (Middlecoat)

father's mother's parents

INDIAN MEDICAL SERVICE (IMS), MADRAS ARMY, MADRAS (CHENNAI)

Frank Edward Fletcher and Elizabeth Stringer Fletcher (Procter)

father's father's parents

FOLKESTONE, SCARBOROUGH, YORK, OXENHOPE (W YORKSHIRE), BARNARD CASTLE

Each Ancestor Chart has links to more detailed chronology chart(s), with lots of links back to source documents like original census returns, church records, birth marriage & death (BMD) certificates, trade and other directories and photos.

Having unearthed much of the basic scaffolding of names, dates and  places back to the early 1800s, we have started the really interesting bit, which is and will be writing illustrated stories of particular lives, geographic areas and times.  There are many other shorter story / photo pages, and links to all chronologies, stories, photos etc can be found in each of the four ancestor charts shown above.

The stories already done and underway include:

The James Cooper Stewart Story - Scottish house painter's son sails to Australia and rises to be Mayor of Melbourne

WW I, Lt Col Jimmy Sproule, 131 Field Ambulance and the 38th (Welsh) Division in the Battlefields of the Somme

The Seward Yeoman Tenant Farmers of 1000 acres in Weston (Hampshire), and family memorials in the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Buriton

Buriton, Hampshire

To keep things manageable, the names in Ciao Famiglia are restricted in the main to direct ancestors.  They are taken from a much larger data-base of families built up by Adrian Fletcher and maintained via a "Roots Magic" family tree program.  Some descendant charts generated by this program are included in the this site's data, and others can be produced on request if any family researcher has a particular interest.
