The Sproule Family at "Denamona" in Fintona, Co Tyrone, N Ireland - c1897

Not at the wedding, the Sproule family looking glum 18 years earlier (c1897)  at their house "Denamona", Fintona, Co Tyrone + 209 acres of land, which Alexander (then 34) had returned from Canada to Ireland in 1881 to occupy, after his childless uncle (mother's brother) Dr Alex Harpur Robinson died in 1880 and bequeathed everything in trust to him to look after for his kids.  Dr Robinson had earlier consigned his wife Jane to the servants' quarters after she ran off with a groom.  One of AHR's first tasks was to track down and recover (for £100) the family silver which had been nicked by a family member living in Fintona.  He then managed to spend most of the monies he had been supposed to look after for his children.  An interesting family.

Back Row - Jack (1880*), Jenny (1878*), Harpur (1876*) (about to emigrate to The Cape - South Africa), Irene (1885), George (1884)

(* born in Canada)

Seated - Alexander H R (1846), wife and first cousin Matilda (1851), Aunt Margaret (sister of Matilda) (1849), Matilda jnr (1875*)

Front - James (the groom higher up) (1887), Anna (1889)

The family said that they became comparatively wealthy in theory with the windfall of Dr Robinson's estate (below), but Alexander, who was a pretend professional photographer in Peterborough (Ontario) in the 1870s, managed the property indifferently and did a lot of depressed drinking.  Certainly none of the wealth ever filtered through to Jimmy Sproule.

Sproule family caravan holiday at Denamona (Fintona, Co Tyrone) 1933 - Peggy (16) Clare (42) Brian (9) Jimmy (46).  One would have thought that there would have been a room or two to spare in the enormous house!
